Mental Health remains one of our most under-addressed healthcare crisis. Globally 450 million people suffer mental health disorders, and in the US prevalence rate is estimated to be 1/5. Despite the US Mental Health Parity Act of 1999 and the WHO 2007 call for improving Mental Health facilities and care worldwide, healthcare systems everywhere remain far from achieving this goal. Obstacles include
1. Cultural Stigmas
2. Lack of Awareness
3. Finances
4. Accessibility
In Eps 1 of the Prescrip-Shens Podcast we highlight some of the qualities of TCM that make it well suited to play a part in addressing our Mental Health crisis, in particular, overcoming cultural stigmas.
Unlike Biomedicine, TCM recognizes
1. Unity of Mind-Body (心身合一)
2. Individualized Patient Care (人格分類)
3. Emotions as Natural and Understandable part of Life (情志相勝)
We then discuss the aspects of our Psyche from a TCM perspective, making connections between our mind and emotions to the Daoist natural philosophy of 5-Elements and our physical organs.
Elements: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water
五行:木,火,土,金,水
Organs: Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lungs, Kidneys
五臟:肝,心,脾,肺,腎
Emotions: Anger, Joy, Worry, Sadness, Fear
五志:怒,喜,思,悲,恐
